Captain Ernest L. Medina had been a member of the Army since 1956, and was commissioned as an officer out of OCS in 1964. Under his leadership at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, Charlie Company became known as "the best outfit in the 11th Brigade," earning him respect from both those below and above him in rank. [2]

Lieutenant William L. Calley, Jr. was a junior college dropout who bounced from job to job in the early and mid-60s before enlisting in the Army. After some success as a military clerk, Calley ended up in Officer Candidate school at Fort Benning, where he graduated 120th out of a class of 156. Because of the high demand for junior officers created by the war, the underwhelming Calley became an officer in Charlie Company in the fall of 1967. [3]
