Although the level of violence against civilians displayed at My Lai has been often viewed as somewhat of an anomaly, there are other examples from U.S. military history that demonstrate how it is not entirely unheard of. When the United States has fought wars of attrition against nations or groups whose citizens are seen as "others" compared to Western or white ideas, civilian massacre or destruction of property has occurred.
